Art Show at Shoffeitt's in Healdsburg!

I am honored to be the Artist of the Month at Shoffeitt's in Healdsburg for February! Sixteen of my original watercolor and ink paintings are on display, and are available for purchase. Take advantage of the lack of rain, and browse around the town square too! This season in wine country is crazy beautiful, takes my breath away.

I have made these pieces very affordable, so grab one before my head gets too big. Because then I will start wearing that beret and smock. Actually, the mere thought of that makes me puke. Unless it's the style smock I had in kindergarten. Hmm....

Drippy Ink Models

Last week at life drawing I went for the dip ink again. The method is very freeing for gesture and movement, and always creates a sense of fluidity to the subject matter. Part of the down side, is you get more drops...especially if you are doing fast sketches. The first pose was a 20 minute position, the second a quicker pose.

I think I'm becoming artist-in-residence at Spring Lake. This time of year is creating incredible sunsets...beams of golden light hit the trees and hillside, such electric yellows and orange hues! Today I made two small inks, the second one being more my favorite than the first.

Abstract Ink Pistachio

Early evening yesterday, I stopped at the Mission Street McDonald's for some unsweetened ice tea. (Loving that $1.09 drink deal, pretty much the only thing I can eat there anyway). This Santa Rosa McDonald's is the last surviving establishment in America that plays actual elevator music. Seriously, the kind with the insane reverb string section and men's echo chorus? And they blast it too. Hell yeah.

I am fascinated by this. And, my favorite pistachio trees are right outside in the parking lot. So this is what you get with dip ink, ice tea, and elevator music:

Whoever came up with the idea for the ornamental pistachio trees in Sonoma County/Santa Rosa, I love you!! These trees turn brilliant shades of orange, yellow, pink-red and red. They rival any East Coast autumnal display I can remember. Our season started very early this year, and I was worried the color wouldn't come through....but the healthy ones have indeed.

Back at the Lake

Today was a day where nothing could go right. Thankfully, my husband jumped in and took a huge load off of my shoulders, so I could go out and paint. That was really, really nice.

After walking around Spring Lake in Santa Rosa for about an hour, (lugging along my full watercolor palette and tool set), this scene caught my eye. It wasn't anything particularly special, and not even the view of the lake....but at the right angle of the sun, this little trail down the hill and unmowed field seemed pretty.

It was a very hot day today, and people stopped to watch me paint. Nice conversations. Many, many butterflies too.

I was at my friend Lena's house the other night, and decided to paint her while we chilled in front of the TV. She had on a knit scull cap and shawl, and I noticed how her features were so striking. Her Swedish cheekbones and all....with that cap, she could have been a thousand year old woodcut print. She dislikes her features, but I think she's beautiful. So there, Lena, you're on my blog.

I had my first mini art walk today, down on Healdsburg Avenue, right off the square. It was good! Exhausting, but I received many comments of appreciation. The plan is to be there (208 Healdsburg Avenue, Healdsburg, CA) every Saturday (without rain, anyway) from around 2-5pm. I will always have a small collection of original artwork for sale, and my easel with be showing a work in progress too.

After showing I stopped into Cafe Gratitude, right next door. To my joy, the menu is 99% gluten free, including all the homemade desserts. Oh, yeah! I drew this big, old sunflower in a milk bottle on the table. contact me if interested in this 5x7 sketch on acid-free watercolor paper .

I pulled over at a corner in far West Santa Rosa, with very little time to spare....the sun is going down sooner and sooner every day now...boo! Whipped out my kit and set up on the trunk of my car (that new paint job I was fantasizing about is seeming more and more ridiculous). The light changes caught my eye, with this big, dark tree in the foreground, and the sun hitting a white fence in the distance.

Snake Plein Air

Yesterday I went for some plein air painting at Spring Lake, Santa Rosa. This time I hiked on the wilder Bay Ridge Trail area. A jogger passed me by and then stopped ahead by about 15 feet. Thinking he was adjusting his iPod or texting on his cell, I didn't pay much attention. There was a large pile of horse dung on the side of the trail, as this was an equestrian area. The pile seemed to slither....

Wow. Snake! Cool, pretty markings...pretty big....fat....well fed......the tail....oh. Well, look at that! A rattle.

My first rattlesnake!

I knew this guy wasn't angry, as he didn't make any rattle noise. He moved pretty slowly past me, and I figured it was best to stand and watch. This snake had to have been about 4 feet long, maybe even 5 feet.

It dawned on me that maybe finding another area would be a good move. All I needed was a den of snakes. So I continued down the trail another football field length, and plopped down to do a quick painting. Why yes, quick is good, as it keeps your abstract chops up! Quick, quick, quick. Yup.

I was just outside of Guerneville the other day, and decided it was the right time to capture this enormous vineyard Korbel has, right in amongst the trees. A beautiful sea of green, with the sun's rays streaming in the slight haze. I plan on going back again to capture different angles throughout the seasons.

It may be because of our unusually cool summer in Sonoma County, (unlike the rest of the country for 2011!), but I could swear the trees are starting to turn quicker this year. I emphasized this combination in a landscape at Luther Burbank Farms.

Johnson's Beach, Guerneville

Up the road in Redwood and Russian River land, I found this little pebble beach on a river bank. Complete with a snack and beer hut that plays 40's and 50's jazz on outdoor speakers, I set up camp on a bench underneath an umbrella. The river bend caught my eye, with it's multiple layers of tress and foliage, including a backline that stood strong and teal colored in a slight haze.

I'm finding joy in oil painting now. Going from watercolor to oils is interesting: on one level, it's almost too easy. Usually people move in the other direction, starting with acrylics and oils and then attempt watercolors. The tricks on my brain keep things alive, that's for sure. At first I plopped the oil paint down on the canvas, and....it sat there. Hmm. Definitely not like watercolor. I need to manipulate every move with this stuff.

But, then the beauty of sliding this colorful butter around became clear. Oh, you want to change the background entirely? Even make it lighter? Go right ahead! Put light on top of dark? Yes, that is what it is made for! Yippee!

Sushi and Shrimp

I love-love-love going to the local Mongolian BBQ joint for a meal and a paint. The food is so colorful, and I can take so many platefuls for an all-you-can-eat deal. Not much risk of over eating, as I can't eat anything on the fatty hotplate section anyway. So I heap on piles of beautiful fish, seaweed, and fresh vegetables in rice vinegar. The salmon roe is my favorite, both in taste and in color. This whole shrimp was enjoyable to paint. It had many subtle hues that came in focus upon further inspection.

This 5x7 watercolor/perma Micron ink is on heavy, acid free watercolor paper, and has found a home!

Meanwhile, here is a street scene from upper Potrero Hill, San Fran, last afternoon/evening. It's all perma ink, no watercolor. Going to touch it up some more tonight.

I would love to translate these into additional murals. The layers and details are more than you can achieve with those mail-order decal jobs.

I love Genghis Khan's Mongolian BBQ down in Alameda, with the iron skillet thingy and the gluten free friendly sushi. I treated myself to a mini fish feast, plus some chicken and pork sauteed with veggies and rice wine. The staff enjoyed seeing the final watercolor, as well as watching me eat my model.

Passover Poster

Oh, boy. Here is my final product for our church Seder. This project was agonizing in the beginning. I wasn't in the mood for hand letter for one, although finding oil paint pens eased that situation. Going to run off a few copies for additional posters in a bit after it dries.

The work is hand painted on 12x16 watercolor paper, with black and gold oil pens. Those oil pens are fun! Painting Christ is always interpretive since we don't know what he looked like exactly. I chose to go for an ethnic, traditional look.

Reclaimed Wood Ditty

I loved this found object, a wood plaque, but it had a cheesy, mock Holly Hobbie type drawing on it. So I hit it with acrylics while on a walk in the park. Plein air acrylic painting is very difficult without slow drying additives for your paint. MUST get that, and eventually switch to the Open line by Golden after my stock is used up.

Boyds. (Jersey accent)

So I got asked to do a mural, which was SO MUCH FUN! You may have noticed there is a trend for these words and images on walls, usually monochromatic. This mural is a custom painted version of the theme, specific to the wall. I also had fun with making the glass telephone insulators. I drew some samples of birds in my own style, took a few pictures of telephone poles with me, and used the actual specimen outside the project house as a live model. Which stood still. Imagine that.

The insulators I painted in my artist acrylics. The black is good, old, Benjamin Moore interior house paint. MUST get other jobs like this, yes.

More Storm Action

I'm complaining about the rain but it is giving me beautiful skies!

It's time to decide how I like to frame these watercolors also. The glass-on-glass system is not the best for changing weather and humidity conditions, especially larger pieces, so I'm researching the float frame with spacers idea. Traditional matting is OK too, I do have a mat cutter. Something about that look is old fashioned though. Hmm. We will see, I'll document the results.

I'm Waterlogged

OK, I'm grateful for all this rain, really, but I'm growing a thin layer of moss on my skin. There seems to be gills on my neck also, so I'm rather looking forward to IT STOPPING ANYTIME NOW.

The wetness is causing me to see things in a different way, though. Like this crazy tree I painted while in my car driver's seat, looking through the windshield.

I hated this painting in the beginning stages. Sometimes with watercolor a person needs to let go and let the paint do it's thing.

I plan on putting this one in May's showing, but I could be convinced to sell it.

Hail and Moon

Last night there was a tremendous hail storm in the Albany/El Cerrito area of San Francisco's East Bay. Normally I go down to a life drawing session in Berkeley, but the sky was just incredible looking. So I parked down by the water outside of Golden Gate Fields, and set up my paints on the trunk of my trusty Saturn. Dum-dee-dum-dee-dum....."Boy, that sky looks rather ominous! Wonder what kind of storm is coming tonight?" [CRACK OF LIGHTENING--THUNDER]

"Oh, crap! Wait, I have to get the secondary purples in....WAIT! PLEASE!" (Who am I yelling at? God? Snow Miser?)

Well, it didn't wait. That hail hurt! I got the piece inside first, then jumped in the car with the rest of my supplies. Quite a frightening storm, even for this East Coast native. The hail piled on my car like pearled kitty litter. Yes, that's the first thing I thought of, Kitty Pearls.

Little Vineyard

Well, this vineyard isn't tiny exactly, but it's only about an acre I believe, off of Hall Rd. near the city of Santa Rosa. So amazing how the vines appear so bare, and by summer they will be lush and green. Still just little nubbies in mid-March. The rain has made brightly colored wildflowers and grasses grow under and around the rows, but in the summer, that color will be mostly brown.

This 12"x16" watercolor will be displayed in a local, May/June showing I have in the South A Street arts district of Santa Rosa. I will most likely make this original available for purchase. Stay tuned!

A beautiful day today, but quite cold. We sat on a park bench bundled up, me drawing and painting, husband reading. Brr. The fingers kept moving!

Last night I had the nicest time at life drawing. A woman introduced me to using quill/fountain head pens with dip ink, and then a little H2O-brush action. I am officially in love. Yes, I know, I said this about the Uni-Ball, and the Sakura Micron, (still using both), but this old school style.....oh!

Bless her heart, Kelly is going to get an art present next Friday night from me.

Spring Lake, Santa Rosa, California

There is a beautiful lake in Sonoma County that is available for everyone to enjoy. A great hiking destination with trails and fitness trial points, fishing, boating, and picnic areas.

I plan on sketching this area through the seasons, and bringing my acrylics along later too. (Especially now that I am in love with Golden's Open line...oh, it's plein air love! Check out the extended drying time and oil-like quality of this line, fantastic!!)

Here's a watercolor/sketch of the foliage in late winter for the area. So many multi-colored branches and twigs! This original painting is 6" x 11.5", on acid free, 130 lb paper.

The Silly Guinea Hen

I found this crazy, large bird today while walking in the Sonoma County area. She wouldn't let me take her picture, so I sat down real fast and drew her. Turns out she is a Guinea Hen. Very comical.

Cowboy the Pitt

Our friend Mary Wolfe, who died this month and now rests in God's peace, had a Pitt named Cowboy. Cowboy is a big bucket of love, a truly kind and affectionate companion. I followed him around the family living room for an hour and 1/2 last night, capturing his personality. It was quite comical. Here are three poses:

Chinese Lanterns at Mini Spa

I've been going to this Chinese Reflexology place in either of the two Santa Rosa malls with a friend. Two massage junkies we are. This is a quick sketch/watercolor of the lanterns.
After living over 20 years in the Bay Area of California, I notice I can now differentiate from some regional accents in China and Asia. The folks who run this biz are from Beijing, with their strong "R's". Actually, this accent is easier to follow for an American.
